Step by step through equipment repair
A pump that is loud or will not prime is usually a seal, an impeller or an air leak on the suction side rather than a dead motor. Diagnosing which is a short job and it is the difference between a part and a replacement.
Variable-speed pumps cost more and pay it back in running cost faster than most people expect, because a pool pump running long and slow moves the same water for a fraction of the electricity.

FAQ
What owners ask about equipment repair
Why is my pool pump loud or not pumping?
Air in the system from a leak on the suction side, a blocked impeller, a failing motor bearing, or a pump that is losing its prime. A screaming pump is a bearing; a pump that runs but moves little water is air or a blockage. Most are repairs; a pump that has been failing for a season is often better replaced with a variable-speed unit that costs a fraction to run.
Is a salt water pool really easier?
It is a chlorine pool where the chlorine is made from salt by a cell rather than added by hand, so the water is gentler and the daily dosing goes away. It is not maintenance-free: the cell needs cleaning and eventually replacing, the pH drifts and needs correcting, and the salt level is monitored. Most people who switch do not go back.
